I just couldn't resist getting a new video card. Here is the card I bought: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130082

an 8800 GTS 320MB model. It replaced dual SLI 6600GT's. Here is the machine specs:
DFI NF4-ultra Modded to SLI, bios: 623-3
Opteron 165 9x300=2700Mhz, 1.54v
OCZ PC3200EL Platinum rev. 2, 2.5-4-4-8, 1T, 9:10, 2.7v
2x LeadTek 6600GT's sli mode
Seagate SATA 160GB
NEC ND-3550A

Nvidia 93.71 drivers for the 6600GT's
Nvidia 97.94 drivers for the 8800GTS
1280x960 screen res, and all settings unchanged between tests.

The test: I took 3 demos on a very stressful, orange/tower type map (because it was early and FNF was empty), I then took 2 demos on flash playing Buzz. I then played those back using the "timedemo" function to see the average frames per second with the old and new cards. Keep in-mind the orange style maps, aren't very stressful for the video card, the flash demos is where the performance difference is.

The results:
    6600GT's
    Map Ave FPS Variability
  • Tower 1 / 100.96 / 14.282
  • Tower 2 / 93.45 / 12.122
  • Tower 3 / 103.55 / 9.695
  • Flash 1 / 36.56 / 2.025
  • Flash 2 / 36.95 / 1.596
    8800GTS
    Map Ave FPS Variability
  • Tower 1 / 140.88 / 15.745
  • Tower 2 / 128.46 / 10.502
  • Tower 3 / 115.17 / 8.228
  • Flash 1 / 106.43 / 7.823
  • Flash 2 / 107.35 / 6.192

Average overall % gain: 61.06%
Average % gain on just FLASH: 190.81%

It runs all the maps I have played with the server full with a min FPS of about 70, and normally averages more than that. 70 is the minimum I have seen. Another good thing about evga, that I am going to try, is they have a 90day trade in program for certain cards, and this is one of them. My understanding is if a new card comes out I can basically trade this one in and have the full purchase price applied to a new video card.

Is this the right place to complain about Bones new equipment? I think last night somehow him having far superior equipment made me lag alittle and for sure my score suffered. If you experienced the same thing then lets vote on if Bone can keep his new video card or must sell it on EBAY! tongue.gif

I can't really track the temps right now, because nvidia has the special drivers for the 8800's, and I don't want to install ntune. Motherboard Monitor 5 is telling me the core is idleing at 54'C. Can't see the ambient temp because of the drivers. Just enabled the high temp alarm, so I will know if it gets above a set temperature, I set it to 70'C.

My 6600GT would peg out MBM5 alarm at 70'C, then 75'C, the 80'C, so then I just turned the alarm off.

I then realized i should cut the crappy fan vents out of the $25 case I have, and get fan grills. This helped so much, I couldn't believe it, the nf4 chipset used to be around 50-55'c at idle, after the cutting it is 40-42'C idle. I am sure it helped video card temps to.

Moral of the story, good case air-flow is really important.

I was wondering why DOD:S looked different since the card update, well someone has issues with the drivers or game. The dynamic shadows appear full black, even through wall, and the fog is all messed up. Noticed it on campozzo.

This was in Nvidias' driver release notes:
QUOTE
Half-Life 2 Lost Coast: GeForce 8800 GTX fog looks different than Geforce 7900 GTX fog, and dynamic shadows look solid black. The Geforce 8800 GTX image quality matches the Microsoft Reference Rasterizer. This issue may affect other Half-life 2 based engines such as Counter-Strike Source and Half-life Episode 1. Nvidia is working with the application developer to try to patch their application

I was also wondering why the menus are grey to almost white, instead of the black/dark grey. This explains it I think.
