While this seems like an obvious question, to me it depends on the magnitude of difference between the 2 systems. I am currently running a Dell Dimesnion XPS Gen 2: P4 hyperthreading, 3.0 Ghz, 800 FSB, with 3 GB RAM.

I have opportunity to now swap that with a newer work system: a Dell Dimension 9200, Pentium D dual, 2.4 Ghz, 2 GB of the new faster ram.

While Im sure the newer one is faster, would it be considerably and notceably faster for gaming or just somewhat? I hate the idea of having to reload and reset all the trillion of applications I have isntalled now. The P4 h/t I have now is working fine, but dont want to miss an opportuntiy. Will keep my current ATI X800 video card. Thoughts?

I was told by a tech at CompUSA that for FPS dual core does nothing. Don't know if that is true or not.

In general yes dual core does nothing for gaming. But once games start supporting/begin made for dual core machines, it will make a difference. The source engine is suppose to be getting dual core support before EP2 comes, so we will see: http://fnfonline.com...?showtopic=3294

hey gs,

after speaking with one of our windows guys, here are my thoughts.

- yes, it would be faster
- the dual core would be beneficial for applications that are setup to utilize it.
- the dual core would be beneficial with multitasking
- i think that valve will be recoding the source client software to support dual cores at some point. (see bone's post above)
- it would be beneficial if they provided 3 gb on the new pc.

hope this is helpful.

btw, i deleted the other post under technology since this thread is progressing.

thx,

bat

Thanks Bat. I did use the dual core to Install Office 2003 and the install went WAY faster than on a standard P4. Im going to have to swap out just for the opportunity. I will go 3-4 mb on the ram. Evewn the ram is faster. I should not look a gift horse in the mouth, but I loath the reloading/re-tweaking/re-organizing a fresh install. But, Im gonna do it rolleyes.gif
